Februar 2nd, 2012 Letztes Jahr bekam ich gleich zwei Strickbücher geschenkt, “Modern Top-Down Knitting” von Kristina MacGowan und – mehr oder weniger unausweichlich – “Knitting from the Top” von Barbara Walker. Beide Bücher habe ich in einem Rutsch durchgelesen, und nun komme ich endlich zum Ausprobieren.
Last year, I got two knitting books from Favourite Husband, “Modern Top-Down Knitting” by Kristina MacGowan and – inevitably, one should guess – “Knitting from the Top” by Barbara Walker. I read both books cover to cover, and now am finally getting round to putting them to practice.
Angefangen habe ich vorgestern etwas zögerlich und mit dieser uralten Opal-Wolle, mit dem Hintergedanken, wenn es mir nicht gefällt oder gelingt, kann ich ruhig ribbeln, diese Wolle wäre kein sooooo großer Verlust. Mittlerweile gefällt sie mir allerdings gut, sie ist schön weich, wenn ich mir auch diese Farbe nicht nochmal aussuchen würde. Der Halsausschnitt könnte vielleicht kleiner sein, aber da die Wolle eher leicht ist, der Pulli also eher ein leichter Frühlings- oder Herbstpulli wird, kann ich mit dem Ausschnitt leben.
I started rather timidly the day before yesterday with this old Opal yarn, thinking that if I didn’t like how it would turn out, or didn’t get it right, I could frog it without too much of a loss, yarn-wise. Meanwhile, I’ve come to love the yarn, it’s beautifully soft, though I must admit I wouldn’t choose the same colour. The neck part could be smaller but as this is a rather light yarn and the pullover is going to be more of a spring or early autumn garment, I can live with it.
Ich hätte auch erst den Rücken bis zu den Armausschnitten und dann erst das Vorderteil stricken können, aber für den ersten Versuch wollte ich lieber beides recht gleichzeitig stricken, um zu sehen, wie alles hinkommt. Und es ist tatsächlich so einfach, wie ich es mir vorgestellt hatte. Der Anschlag erfolgt per Invisible Cast-on, der sehr simpel ist, wenn man erstmal weiß, wie er geht, aber höllisch blöd zu erklären. Es lohnt sich aber, sich durch die Beschreibung zu beißen.
Of course I could have knit the back first down to the armholes and add the front part after that, but as this is the first time, I decided I’d rather knit them simultaneously to see how it works out. And mind you, it’s ever so simple. Casting on is done via Invisible Cast-on which is a piece of cake once you know how to do it, but one hell to explain. It’s totally worth fighting your way through the description, though.
Ich bin jetzt am Ende der Armausschnitte, nun werden Maschen zugenommen für unterm Arm und dann die beiden Teile vereint. Danach muß ich einfach nur noch glatt rechts runterstricken bis zum Bündchen, also ziemlich mindless.
I have now reached the end of the armholes, now I just have to add stitches for the underarm parts and then join the front and back. After that, it’s getting to be very mindless stockinette stitching down to the cuff.
Hier noch der Blick auf die Schulter. Man sieht den Invisible Cast-On so gut wie gar nicht, und auch die Ausformung der Schultern mittels verkürzten Reihen fällt nicht so direkt ins Auge, gibt aber dem ganzen Pulli einen besseren Sitz. Bisher bin ich mehr als zufrieden mit den Erklärungen in “Knitting from the Top”.
So here’s a look on the shoulder. You can hardly see the Invisible Cast-on, and the shoulder shaping done with short rows doesn’t stick out but helps to give a much better fit. So far, I’m more than content with the instructions in “Knitting from the Top”.
Januar 18th, 2012 Sorry für das unangebrachte Pathos, aber ich bin so froh, diesen Shrug endlich fertig zu haben. Ich bekam schon langsam Alpträume. Aber nun ist er erledigt. Ha!
I apologize for being so pathetic but I’m just so glad this shrug is done and finished. I was actually beginning to have nightmares about it but now it’s over and done with. Strike!
Wie immer sieht Sophie natürlich viel besser drin aus als ich, mal abgesehen davon, daß sie keine Arme hat, aber die denkt Ihr Euch halt bitte einfach dazu. Im Grunde ist so ein Shrug nichts weiter als ein Rechteck, das auf zwei Seiten so weit zugenäht wird, daß die Arme drin Platz haben und es nicht runterrutscht. Ich habe zwei Rechtecke gleichzeitig gestrickt und die dann in der Rückenmitte mit dem Three Needle Bindoff verbunden. Die Ärmelnähte habe ich im Matratzenstich geschlossen und am Schluß noch ein schmales Bündchen rundum angestrickt, damit sich das Rückenteil nicht einrollt.
As usual, Sophie looks so much better wearing it than I do, apart from the fact that she doesn’t have arms – but I’m sure you won’t have any difficulty imagining arms inside the sleeves, do you? All in all, a shrug is just a rectangle with two seams on either side that are just long enough to cover the arms and make sure the thing doesn’t slip off the shoulders. I knit two rectangles simultanousely and used the Three Needle Bindoff to seam them together in the middle of the back. The sleeve seams were done with mattress stich, and I added a small cuff to make sure the back wouldn’t curl.
Es ist ein niedliches kleines Teil und sicher sehr praktisch, zum Beispiel wenn ich auf dem Sofa unter einer Decke kuschele und mir nur um die Schultern und Arme herum kühl wird, oder an Tagen, an denen eine Jacke zu warm, ein T-Shirt allein aber doch etwas zu kühl ist. Dafür, daß es so ein einfaches Teil ist, habe ich doch extrem viel Zeit drauf vergeudet. Aber immerhin habe ich jetzt das Prinzip eines Shrugs verstanden und weiß beim nächsten Teil, was ich besser machen kann. Und weil ich ihn ja praktisch nochmal ganz neu gestrickt habe, erlaube ich mir, ihn als erstes Teil für meine “20 + 12 in 2012″ zu zählen. :-D
It’s a cute little thing and I believe it will come in handy, for example when I’m lying on the sofa, wrapped in a blanket, but still feel a bit chilly around the arms and shoulders. Or on days when a jacket is a tad too warm but a shirt is just a tad too cold. Considering that it’s such a simple piece, I’ve wasted far too much time on it. But now that I’ve understood the basic construction of shrugs, I know how to make the next one better. And as I actually frogged the first version and re-made it completely, I will count it as the first finished garment for my “20 + 12 in 2012″. :-D
Januar 10th, 2012  Eigentlich wollte ich den Shrug heute fertigstellen. Also zusammennähen, Fäden vernähen, bißchen durch’s Wasser ziehen … Als ich ihn aus der Tüte nahm, in der er seit dem Fertigstricken vor sich hin schlummerte, dachte ich mir, irgendwie sieht er nicht so aus, wie ein Lieblingsteil aussehen sollte. Kurz entschlossen steckte ich die Ecken zusammen und zog ihn Sophie über.
Today’s plans included finishing the shrug. That would have been sewing corners together, weaving in ends, giving it a soothing bath … When I took it out of the bag it had been waiting in ever since I finished knitting, it occured to me that it doesn’t quite look like a favourite piece should. So off I went, pinned the corners together and put it on Sophie.
Ganz ehrlich? Nee. Echt nicht. Ich weiß nicht genau, woran es liegt, aber ich könnte schwören, daß ich das Teil so, wie es jetzt ist, sicher nicht tragen werde. Für dieses Maß an Formlosigkeit ist das Teil einfach nicht lang genug, und die einrollenden Armausschnitte gefallen mir auch nicht. Also alles auf Anfang, nochmal aufmachen und anders stricken. Z. B. an den Ärmelbündchen anfangen, bis zur Mitte stricken und später noch außen rum ein Bündchen dran. Bis zum nächsten Winter wird das Teil dann schon mal fertig und tragbar sein. Hoffe ich. *seufz*
To tell you the truth – no. No way. I couldn’t even say why but I’m quite sure that I’ll never wear this thing the way it looks now. It is just not long enough to be as shapeless as it is, and besides, I absolutely hate the way the sleeves roll up. So back to the start it is. Frog and start anew with a different pattern. Maybe I’ll start with the sleeve cuffs, work my way up to the middle of the back, and add a ribbed cuff all the way round at the end. It might just get finished and be wearable for next winter. At least I hope so. *sigh*

November 29th, 2011 Endlich kann ich mal ein Bild präsentieren:

Das wird ein Shrug, und zwar der Glitter Shrug von Lionbrand, nur daß meiner ohne Glitter wird. Aber mal ehrlich: so dämlich habe ich mich beim Stricken schon lange nicht mehr angestellt. Dabei ist das Teil nun wirklich so simpel, simpler geht’s nicht. Im Prinzip ist es ein glatt rechts gestricktes Rechteck mit Bündchen oben und unten, das dann später teilweise zusammengenäht wird. Ich fing gleich mal mit einem falschen Bündchenmuster an (weil ich nicht richtig gelesen hab), beim zweiten Anlauf sahen die Seiten blöd aus, und außerdem flutschten die Maschen nicht so recht auf meiner alten Bambusnadel, weshalb ich beschloß, wenn ich eh neu anfangen muß, nehme ich eine Metallnadel. Ich hatte schon ein ziemliches Stück gestrickt, bis mir auffiel, daß das Teil irgendwie so steif ist … logisch, wenn man eine 3mm Nadel nimmt statt der 4mm. *facepalm* Man sollte sein Gestrick eben nie vor dem Abketten loben.
This is going to be a shrug, the Glitter Shrug by Lionbrand, only mine will be without glitter. Honestly, I haven’t messed up my knitting that bad in a long long time. The embarrassing part is that this thing is as simple as they come. Basically it’s a stockinette stitch rectangle with ribbed cuffs on the top and bottom that later on are partly sewn together. Well, I started with a wrong cuff pattern (because I didn’t read the pattern carefully enough), the second attempt didn’t look nice enough around the edges, and besides, the stitches just wouldn’t glide easily on my old bamboo needles so I decided that as I had to start anew anyways, I might as well switch to a metal needle. Quite a good ways in, I thought that the knitting seemed stiff somehow … which made perfect sense when I realized I had grabbed a 3mm needle instead of a 4mm. *facepalm* See, that’s why you should never praise your knitting before bind-off.
Und weil das alles so frustrierend war, wollte ich ein Buch bestellen (und auch, weil ich einen Gutschein bekommen hatte). Weil ich aber in dem Shop zum ersten Mal bestelle, kann ich nur entweder mit einer Kreditkarte bestellen – die ich aber nicht besitze – oder aber mein Buch abholen – aber dann wird der Gutschein nicht angerechnet. Ich hoffe, der Kundenservice findet eine Lösung. Wenn nicht, gibt’s ja auch noch andere Shops. Im Moment reicht es mir einfach.
To make up for all the frustration, I wanted to order a book (and also because I got a voucher). But as I was ordering from that particular shop for the first time, the options were either to pay with a credit card – which I don’t own – or pick my book up at a shop – but then I couldn’t pay with the voucher. I do hope customer service will find a solution. If they don’t, there’ll be other shops to buy from. Right now, I’m just fed up.
